Veteran and Disabled Veteran-Owned Business

The state of New Jersey offers certifications for Veteran Owned Businesses (VOB) and Disabled Veteran Owned Businesses (DVOB).

VOB Eligibility and Registration

A "Veteran" is any citizen and resident of this State now or hereafter honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances who served in any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States or a Reserve component thereof for at least 90 days and shall include disabled veterans.

A "Veteran-owned business" is a business that has its principal place of business in the State, is independently owned and operated, and at least 51% of the business is owned and controlled by persons who are veterans. The Principal Owner must provide a copy of their Federal Form DD-214 indicating honorable discharge or release under honorable circumstances.

If you are a VOB and seek certification, register online with the State of New Jersey application. This certification needs to be reverified annually, complete the VOB verification form here.

DVOB Eligibility and Registration

Disabled Veterans-owned business means a business that:

  1. Has its principal place of business in the State, is independently owned and operated, and at least 51% of the business is owned and controlled by persons who are disabled veterans; or    
  2. Is a business that has its principal place of business in this State and has been officially verified by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as a service-disabled veteran-owned business for the purposes of department contracts under Federal law.

To register as a New Jersey Disabled Veteran Owned Business (DVOB), complete and submit the New Jersey Disabled Veteran Owned Business Registration Application. DVOB certification needs to be reverified annually, you can reverify your DVOB status through the New Jersey Portal.

Application Requirements

In all cases, provide a copy of your proof of business registration with the State of New Jersey.

If you wish to be registered under definition one above, include with your application a Service Connected Award Letter, or comparable communication, from the federal Department of Veterans Affairs for each owner that is a disabled veteran.

If you wish to be registered under definition two above, include with your application the firm's Federal Service Disabled Veteran Owned Business Determination Letter.
