Licensing & Certification Guide

Register your family daycare business with your local Child Care Resource and Referral Agency to ensure you’re in compliance with state rules and regulations and gain more credibility for your business.

You must register as a new home builder with the State if you will build and/or sell new homes, such as single-family houses, duplexes, or condominiums. If you plan to sell the new home to initial buyers, you or your business must be the title holder of the home. You must also renew your new home builder registration every two years.

You must apply for your well driller license to construct wells in New Jersey.

There are 7 well driller license types. Each one has different exam and experience requirements. Review the Appendix A in the application to meet the requirements for your license type.

The requirements below cover the minimum for all licenses.

If the business owner of a cosmetology shop does not have a cosmetology license, the shop manager must have a license and at least two years of experience. Licenses are required for cosmetologists, hairstylists, manicurists, skincare specialists, barbers, hair braiders, and beauticians. It is the shop owner's responsibility to ensure their staff is licensed.

Shops that are new, relocated, or under new ownership must get a license. Once the Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling reviews your application, they will inspect your shop.

If you want to operate a cosmetology school in New Jersey, you need a cosmetology school license.

If you want to teach cosmetology in New Jersey, you need a cosmetology teacher license.
